Crown & Sword is by Kate Catlin, ©2020. It is acrylic paint, gold leaf, and vintage jewelry pieces on canvas, 16×20 in. Using seven dye-based inks, giclee prints provide stunning image detail on archival quality paper in a variety of sizes. Prints include a 1/4 in. border for framing.
“I created Crown & Sword as a gift to my dear friend and business coach, Tina Joy Cochran. It was a long process, as I was directed by Holy Spirit to learn a few new techniques for this piece. The sword and crown are both built up using heavy gel medium, which was a challenge to work with. I’ll definitely be using it in future pieces, as it lets me sculpt images in 3D on the canvas, which was super fun!
“The vintage jewelry pieces were part of an inheritance from my husband’s grandmother, Nelle Fankhauser, who was a fiery lady I admired greatly. She went to meet our Maker in 2019 after a life filled with lots of adventures and beautiful gardens. She probably would’ve thought some of that jewelry was trash, but I’m glad she saved it all. I wear several pieces, and she’s provided me with a lot of fun pieces to deconstruct and put into my art. I am grateful for that.
“God gives us the tools we need to fulfill our purpose here on earth. My purpose is to do art, and I am one of God’s soldiers, enlisted to help bring about His Kingdom here on earth. The crown reminds me to behave like His Queen. The sword reminds me that I am ready to battle for Him.”
